The very first seizure of unaccounted cash of Rs 50 lakh took place in Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, the constituency of the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi

The very first seizure of unaccounted cash in election season comes less than 24 hours after the
Election Commission of India announced dates for polling for 39 Lok Sabha seats and 18
Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. Tiruvarur Assembly seat fell vacant after Karunanidhi’s demise
on August 7, 2018.

Tamil Nadu goes to polls in a single phase on April 18.

Police have already set up check posts at various sensitive spots and begun checking vehicles. At
Kaanur, near Tiruvarur, during such a check, police found Rs 50 lakh in cash in a car. There was
no proper documentation for the amount, which led to seizure of the cash. The vehicle was an
Innova car with an AIADMK flag in front and a picture of late AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on
the dashboard.

The occupant of the vehicle Shahul Hameed is being questioned by the police.

Tamil Nadu is considered a highly sensitive state by the Election Commission of India due to the
widespread practice of distribution of cash for votes.

At a press conference in Chennai on Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata
Sahoo said that the Election Commission has taken a number of measures to ensure that voter
bribing is minimised.

In 2016, the ECI had put in place flying squads comprising police, district administration
officials, election officers as well as IT department officials in order to give more teeth to its fight
against illegal distribution of money.

“We will introduce more measures to curb the distribution of money in addition to what we did
in 2016,” said Sahoo. “We have requested for 200 companies of Armed and Paramilitary Forces
to be provided for Tamil Nadu elections. 10 companies have already arrived,” he added.
