The Koovathur Primary Health Centre witnessed a horrific childbirth where a nurse was forced to handle a delivery that went horribly wrong
In a tragic incident, a childbirth went horribly wrong at Koovathur, Kancheepuram district, as a nurse was forced to help deliver a baby. In the process, the child’s head got ripped off the body as it was emerging from the mother’s womb.
Doctors have operated on the mother and removed the body of the infant that was left inside of her.
Thyagarajan and Bommi are a married couple living in Avadi, near Chennai. Bommi, who was heavily pregnant, went home to Koovathur to be with her mother for the delivery. Early in the morning on 19 February, Bommi went into labour and was rushed to the Government Primary Health Centre in Koovathur.
There was no doctor present at the Primary Health Centre and the delivery was left up to a nurse.
Bommi’s mother Muniyammal said that initially the nurse refused to conduct the delivery. “Then she called someone and they told her to handle it. To our shock the baby’s head came out separately. The baby’s body was left inside my daughter,” she sobbed.
Following the incident, Bommi was rushed to the Chengalpet Government Hospital where she was operated upon and saved, after doctors removed the child’s body from inside of her.
Neighbours and relatives from Bommi’s village – Cuddalore Colony near Kalpakkam – are protesting outside the Chengalpet Government Hospital demanding action against those responsible for such a tragic incident.
