Having racked up debt of an unspecified amount by playing Rummy, the couple took the final step
Police are investigating the joint suicide of a married couple from Nagamalai, Madurai, who had taken their lives over losses while playing the online gambling game Rummy.
Venkata Subramanian, 41, and his wife Pattu Meenakshi, 33, who according to police officials, had married five years ago for love, are residents of Theresa Street in Nagamalai, Madurai district.
Police also stated that Venkata Subramanian hails from Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh and Pattu Meenakshi from Thirunagar in Madurai.
A successful data analyst who passed out of Madurai Kamaraj University, Venkata Subramanian worked with a number of institutes. It was at such an institute that he met and fell in love with Pattu Meenakshi. Trainer and aspirant got married on 10 December 2014.
It appears that the couple had become addicted to online gambling. “The couple who lived a pleasant and luxurious life through earnings by playing online gambling game Rummy has been driven by the same to commit suicide after losing a great sum and getting into debts,” said the neighbours.
Other neighbours also contended that they might have taken their lives due to childlessness.
The couple was not to be seen by neighbours for a few days and when an unbearable smell emanated from their residence, the neighbours alerted the Nagamalai police on Monday afternoon.
The police then broke open the locked doors to discover the couple hanging inside.
The bodies have been sent for postmortem. Police officials have seized some documents from the scene and are probing the same.
